Alkaline Living

The first step to balancing alkalinity is to stay hydrated. When you drink hot / warm water at the beginning of the day, your body opens up like pores in a hot bath, and is able to receive and absorb the water more easily. When you drink cold water, the body becomes more contracted and is less prone to absorbing it. In addition, it’s optimal to drink alkaline water with a pH of 8, 9 or above.

leafheaderIn nature, measuring alkalinity is important in determining a stream’s ability to neutralize acidic pollution from rainfall or wastewater. The same way that alkalinity in the body has the ability to neutralize acidic food and beverages.

Picture your body as a rechargeable battery. Batteries need juice, as well as the materials for conductivity. In humans, the juices are the blood, saliva and lymphatic system; and the muscles, cells, nerves and tendons are the conductors. The body works best when bio-electricity can travel through the circuitry of the nervous system. Having excess acid in the system leads to low conductivity in your body. Modern science has shown that most disease, including heart disease and cancer, is acid based. But the good news is that it’s impossible for disease to survive in an alkaline environment.

Plant based foods are generally less acidic. 

Meat, dairy, refined sugar and coffee are more acidic.


Does this mean you must give up meat, dairy, and even your beloved morning cup of coffee for good?

If you want to air on the side of alkalinity, then you may want to experiment with decreasing intake of some of the items pictured below on the left, and increasing items on the right. Plant based foods like many fruits, vegetables, and wild rice are generally more alkaline, but it’s always good to do further research on which foods are the best for you.


We all know that water makes up to 60% of our body weight. So another way to balance your pH level is to drink alkaline water with a pH level of 8, 9 or above. There are many high-end water filters that you can purchase to filter and alkalize your water in your home. One well known example is the Kangen Water system. You can also purchase bottled alkaline water at Trader Joe’s, or refill your canteen at Whole Foods if you need it on the go. If you are more interested in doing it yourself and you already have a basic water filter at home, there are a few additional

  • Adding fresh squeezed lemon juice to your water.
  • Adding Alkalizing water drops.
  • Adding 1/2 tsp. of baking soda to water.
  • Filtering water with Prill beads that contain magnesium oxide.


Lemons, limes and the notorious health superhero apple cider vinegar are naturally more acidic, with a pH of around 2. This may seem contradictory, but these are special exceptions because once they are in the body, they quickly become alkaline.

A simple indicator of whether your body is more acidic or alkaline is whether lemon juice in hot / warm water tastes sour to you or not.  If the sour taste is strong, your body is more acidic.  If it doesn’t taste sour at all and even tastes like lemonade (without the sugar), your body is in a healthier, more alkaline state.
